In our Division specialists in Pediatric-Adolescent Gynecology examine and treat, newborn females, infants, children and young girls aged up to 21 years old. Patients are referred for examination mainly from  Pediatricians, Gynecologists and Endocrinologists. Infections of female genitals can be diagnosed by culture of vaginal fluid with a Q tip and receive appropriate treatment. Great care and specific treatment protocols are followed in our Division due to the very young age of the patients, which may require systematic therapy and/or local vaginal therapy for the treatment of vulvovaginitis. The diagnostic approach of vulvovaginitis in the pre-pubertial period, is further evaluated  with a systematic and careful examination for mycoplasmatic and chlamydial infections , and in case of a positive result , control of the child’s family is recommended.

Common causes for children’s and adolescents’ visit to this Division are the menstrual disorders, primary and secondary amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, oligomenorrhea and dysfunctional uterine bleeding in adolescence. The precocious and delayed puberty are another area of interest in diagnosis and treatment at this special Division of our Clinic.

Ovarian cysts , dysgenetic gonads , congenital abnormalities of the genital tract , can also be diagnosed by transrectal ultrasound and under the right circumstances are operated laparoscopically , thus reducing the cost of hospitalization and the  psychological burden of young girls , due to their short stay in hospital.

Finally, it should be mentioned that in this Division young girls with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser Syndrome are operated, due to the fact that patients with this syndrome may have aplasia of the uterus and vagina. In our department the technique of Creatsa’s vaginoplasty, which has prevailed internationally for many years, is performed.

In the Division of Pediatric – Adolescent Gynecology and Reconstructive Surgery more than 200 patients have been diagnosed with the syndrome, which consists of uterus agenesia and vaginal aplasia, and have been operated. To this day, this is the largest number published in the literature worldwide.   Fertil Steril. 2009 Nov 23 Creatsas G, Deligeoroglou E, Christopoulos P. " Creation of a neovagina after Creatsas modification of Williams vaginoplasty for the treatment of 200 patients with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome."

One of the 200 girls   operated in our Institution, succeded a twin pregnancy and delivered   two children using her mother’s uterus   (Surrogacy). A second case delivered recently.

The Division is the only in Greece dealing with Gynecologic Reconstructive Surgery at an early age and is a Referral Center for congenital abnormalities of the genital tract in young ages, not only for Greece but also from abroad.

In this Division Obstetricians-Gynecologists and Pediatricians can get further training for acquisition of adequate qualifications in Adolescent Gynecology, since it’s one of the world’s internationally recognized centers for further training in the   sub-specialty of Pediatric-Adolescent Gynecology and Reconstructive Surgery.
